The Study of Happiness Begins in Misery

Professor Daniel Horowitz is the Mary Huggins Gamble Foundation Chair and Professor of American Studies Emeritus, Smith College. He is a historian whose work focuses on the history of consumer culture and social criticism in the U.S. during the 20th Century. His honors include fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Humanities Center and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. He also held an appointment as Honorary Visiting Fellow at the Schlesinger Library, Radcliffe College, Harvard University. Professor Horowitz also received his PhD from Harvard University in 1967.

His is the author of the recently published book “Happier? The History of a Cultural Movement That Aspired to Transform America.” The book provides the first history of the origins, development and impact of the effort to shift the focus in the considerations of the human condition from mental illness to subjective well-being.
