A Systematic Approach to designing an Implementation strategy to increase Lung cancer screening and Smoking cessation treatment among Federally Qualified community Health Center patients who smoke (SAILS-FQHC)

Project Summary: This study will use a stakeholder-engaged process to identify key determinants of implementing lung cancer screening (LCS) and smoking cessation treatment (SCT) interventions in Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), collaboratively design an implementation strategy matched to these determinants, and pilot test the strategy with two FQHCs.

The implementation strategy will be created from a menu of options, matched to the key determinants, the strengths and resource constraints of the FQHC context, and patient-centered factors. A pilot test of the strategy, will assess implementation process outcomes and change in reach in terms of LCS orders, SCT prescriptions and Quitline e-referrals before and after implementation and compared to a matched control.

Improving the delivery of LCS and SCT has the potential to significantly reduce health disparities and cancer mortality in the diverse populations served by FQHCs. This project will establish the feasibility of a community-engaged, systematic approach to the collaborative design of implementation strategies to deliver these life-saving interventions.
