June 12, 2024 – Because avocados contain high levels of nutrients, they may provide multiple health benefits, according to experts.
“Avocados are no regular fruits. They’re nutrient dense with very little carbohydrates and high amounts of healthy fats and fiber,” said Frank Hu, Fredrick J. Stare Professor of Nutrition and Epidemiology at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, in a June 5 New York Times article about avocados.
In a 2022 study, Hu and colleagues followed more than 110,000 adults over the course of 30 years. The researchers found that individuals who ate two or more servings of avocados per week had a 21% lower risk of heart disease. However, Hu noted that while avocados were linked with a lower disease risk, other factors also could have contributed—for instance, people who eat avocados may have a healthier diet in general.
