Dr. Gauvreau's research focuses on biostatistical issues arising in the field of pediatric cardiology. One particular area of interest has been exploring institutional variability in outcomes following surgery for congenital heart disease. A series of projects use hospital discharge abstract data to examine differences in clinical outcomes such as in-hospital mortality, measures of resource consumption such as length of stay in the hospital, and strategies of patient care. Because the analysis of variability in outcomes requires that appropriate adjustments be made for individual patient risk to allow for comparisons across institutions, Dr. Gauvreau also works on the development and validation of methods of adjustment for case mix complexity.
