Medicare for All proposal carries risks for Elizabeth Warren’s campaign

When Sen. Elizabeth Warren revealed numerous details on how her administration would implement a Medicare for All health care policy, including building upon the Affordable Care Act, it added to an already contentious debate about health care among presidential hopefuls.

A November 18, 2019 Associated Press article noted that Democrats are split on whether pursuing Medicare for All is worth is worth the political risk in the 2020 presidential election. The policy could cost Warren as more moderate members of the party look to steer clear of Medicare for All.

“The Medicare for All proposal has turned out to be a real deal-breaker in who gets the Democratic nomination,” said Robert Blendon, Richard L. Menschel Professor of Public Health and Professor of Health Policy and Political Analysis at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. “This is not just another issue.”
