compressed and vsmallThe Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA) and Harvard School of Public Health  (HSPH) are pleased to offer a new combined training program, administered by Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health faculty. 

The four-year program will allow residents to become board-eligible in both specialties: internal medicine and occupational (preventive) medicine and receive a Masters of Public Health Degree (MPH) at HSPH.

Both the CHA Internal Medicine and HSPH Occupational & Environmental Medicine Residencies have full ACGME accreditation, and the combined program has been approved by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Preventive Medicine.  

The combined program is co-directed by Dr. Richard Pels (CHA) and Dr. Stefanos Kales (HSPH/CHA).

Brief Curriculum Summary
(CHA Curriculum) (HSPH Curriculum)

PGY-1 year

Consists of twelve, 4-week blocks of internal medicine (IM), one block of elective in occupational medicine (OM), and a continuity clinic in IM.

PGY-2 year

Consists of nine, 4-week blocks of IM; four blocks of elective, two of which will be in OM; and continuity clinics in IM and OM.

PGY-3 year

Consists of four, 4-week blocks of IM, and IM and OM continuity clinics; and a nine month MPH curriculum that emphasizes occupational and environmental medicine, which is equivalent to the didactic program undertaken by categorical HSPH OM residents. 

PGY-4 yearfirefighters

Consists of four, 4-week blocks of IM, and IM and OM continuity clinics. PGY-4 residents also complete another nine, 4-week blocks of OM practicum work.  During the practicum     year each combined OM/IM resident will complete a primary research project.
