Join this François-Xavier Bagnoud (FXB) Center work in progress (WIP) seminar to get a glimpse into Afghanistan’s health sector over the past 20 years. Faramarz Jahanbeen, MD, MPH, EMBA, will deliver a presentation highlighting the key achievements and limitations of the Afghan health care system in the past 20 years and his roles within the health sector and civil society in Afghanistan.

Speaker: Faramarz Jahanbeen, MD, MPH, EMBA, Harvard Humanitarian Initiative Research Fellow

Currently, Dr. Jahanbeen is working with the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative (HHI) as a Research Fellow. His activities with HHI are focused on public health and humanitarian topics.

Previously, he has worked: 1) with Particip GmbH and Royal KIT Institute as Technical Manager for HMIS Verification and Functionality Assessments; 2) with SAF organization as Acting General Director, Deputy General Director, Program Director, Organization Development (OD) Director, Planning, Monitoring & Research (PMR) Director and Harm Reduction Project Manager; 3) with Ministry of Martyrs and Disabled as M&E Advisor to Deputy Minister; 4) with BDN organization as Senior Monitoring & Evaluation Officer; 5) with MTN-Afghanistan as Benefits & Compensation Coordinator; 6) and with Ministry of Public Health as training coordinator within HR Directorate.

Dr. Jahanbeen so far has led more than 35 developmental and humanitarian projects (Basic Package of Health Services, Research, Nutrition, Disability, TB, Malaria, Child Protection, Women Empowerment, HIV Harm Reduction, etc) in many provinces in Afghanistan.

He simultaneously has been extensively involved in humanitarian and civil society activities mainly through the following platforms:

  1. WILPF-Afghanistan: He is Co- founder and a member of WILPF-Afghanistan, since 2015. Moreover, Dr. Jahanbeen was a member of the male alliance under the Confronting Militarized Masculinities (CMM) project as recently implemented by WILPF-Afghanistan.
  2. KNHAR: Since 2015, he has active membership in Karama Network of Advocacy and Human Rights (KNHAR). This network works mainly on women’s rights. Through this network he fought to include the law of elimination of violence against women in the constitution of Afghanistan.
  3. GFF: Since 2019, he has been a representative/Focal Point of Afghanistan’s Civil Society for Global Financing Facility (GFF) which is a global funding mechanism for support of every woman and every child, launched by the World Bank.
  4. UN-OCHA’s advisory board: From January 2020 up to December 2020, he was a member of UN-OCHA’s advisory board. The Advisory Board (AB) is a governance body that supports the humanitarian coordinator (HC) in the management of the AFGHANISTAN HUMANITARIAN FUND (AHF).
  5. CANSA: Since January 2020, he has been a member of steering committee of Afghanistan’s Climate Action Network South Asia (CANSA).

Moderator: Jacqueline Bhabha, JD, MSc, FXB Director of Research

Jacqueline Bhabha is a Professor of the Practice of Health and Human Rights at the Harvard T.H.Chan School of Public Health, the Jeremiah Smith Jr. Lecturer in Law at Harvard Law School, and an Adjunct Lecturer in Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School. She is also the Director of Research at the FXB Center for Health and Human Rights at Harvard University. She received a first class honors degree and an M.Sc. from Oxford University, and a J.D. from the College of Law in London.
