August 25, 2016—The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health community welcomed new students during Orientation activities, which were held August 22-26. The weeklong program provided an introduction to the School and the core values of public health.
On Monday, August 22, Dean Michelle A. Williams welcomed students during a speech at the Joseph B. Martin Conference Center. Williams told the incoming students that they’re united by their passion to make a difference in the world. “Many of you have made great sacrifices to be here today—you’ve left family and jobs, you’ve taken on debt, you’ve put other goals on hold. You have done this because you are determined to use your talents and skills to make the world a better, healthier place. You are here because you want to serve,” she said.
On the first day of Orientation students also heard from Boston’s Chief Resilience Officer, Atyia Martin, who spoke about resilience and racial equity in Boston. Other Orientation activities included a Fundamental Concepts of Public Health mini-course taught by Professor Sue Goldie and a new student reception at the Martin Conference Center.
