Op-ed: Roma, African Americans still face discrimination

Although slavery of both the Roma and of African Americans was abolished in the 19th century, both peoples continue to face discrimination and exploitation, according to two Harvard scholars.

In a February 20, 2018 opinion piece in The Guardian, Margareta Matache and Cornel West wrote that “the impetus to kill and chain Roma and African American bodies remains one of the appalling facets of how the criminalization and demonization of these peoples have historically translated into action.”

Matache, an activist and scholar from Romania, is an instructor for the FXB Center for Health and Human Rights at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. West is Professor of the Practice of Public Philosophy at Harvard University.
