Underrepresented faculty gather for career discussion, networking

October 18, 2018 – Assistant and associate faculty from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Harvard Medical School, and other Boston-area universities gathered on October 16, 2018 in Kresge 110 for networking and a panel discussion about career advancement and inclusion.

David Williams, Florence Sprague Norman and Laura Smart Norman Professor of Public Health, shared his tips for success for junior faculty, which included developing a strong network of peers and mentors to review work, and blocking out time to focus on writing. John Silvanus Wilson, senior adviser and strategist to Harvard President Larry Bacow, discussed the evolution of his career, Harvard’s progress on diversity, and the need to create truly inclusive environments. Yvette Cozier, assistant dean of diversity and inclusion and associate professor of epidemiology at Boston University School of Public Health, discussed the importance of networking across academic institutions.

The event, sponsored by the Office of the Dean, brought together faculty from a variety of underrepresented groups from several schools and was organized by Betty Johnson, assistant dean for faculty and staff diversity, development and leadership.
