Stent use rose in India after prices were slashed

A price reduction for coronary stents in the Indian state of Maharashtra led to a 43% increase in the number of patients who underwent heart procedures with the devices, according to a new study. The findings come amid concerns that price reduction strategies will cause companies to pull out of the Indian market. According to the authors, the price reduction helped lower-income people access life-saving procedures, and it was offset by the increased number of patients.

Co-author Sujata Saunik conducted the research as a Takemi Fellow at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
