Facebook Live: How to reform SNAP

Sara Bleich, professor of public health policy, discussed ideas for improving the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) during a Facebook Live Q&A on Tuesday, March 6, 2018.

SNAP is America’s largest nutritional safety net, serving nearly one in seven people. The Trump administration has proposed deep cuts to SNAP’s budget and recently floated the idea of replacing many SNAP recipients’ benefits with a food box containing “shelf-stable milk, ready to eat cereals, pasta, peanut butter, beans, and canned fruit and vegetables.” In the video below Bleich discusses the potential impact of these proposals, as well as ideas for reforming SNAP so recipients are able to purchase healthier foods.
