Dr. Xia is a Professor in the Toxicology Program and an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Pharmacology at University of Washington. She is also the deputy director of the UW Superfund Research Program (SRP). Dr. Xia’s main research interests are to investigate whether and how exposure to environmental neurotoxicants including heavy metals may perturb adult neurogenesis (the generation of functional neurons in the adult brain) and impair olfaction and cognition. She is especially interested in how interactions between genes and environmental factors (GXE) may affect these processes and accelerate memory decline in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease.
