This workshop is to aim to clarify HIPAA requirements and practice of using AWS Cloud Computing to handle secure HIPAA data.

  • Overview of the requirements of HIPAA and the AWS Shared Responsibility Model (45 min)
  • Specific AWS approaches to the four given scenarios (1 Hr)
    • How to transfer HIPAA data from HSPH to AWS and store it securely
    • How to transfer regulated data from government sources (NIH, dbGaP) to AWS and store it securely
    • How to transfer data from AWS to HSPH securely
    • How  to share data on AWS securely
  • Break (15 min)
  • The AWS HIPAA Quick Start (30 min)
  • Lab:  Deploying and using Jupyter Notebooks (Python) in AWS (45 min)
  • Lab:  Deploying and using RStudio (R) in AWS (45 min)

Seating is limited.  Priority will be given to members of the Department of Biostatistics.
