Independent Study Courses

Independent Study sections are courses supervised by faculty. Students interested in taking one of these courses should reach out to the faculty they want to work with and discuss their intentions with their academic advisor and program head.

Independent Study Request Process

  1. A student will request enrollment in an Independent Study course by finding the listing in the course catalog, and submitting a proposal.  The proposal for will include: units/number of credits, grading basis (pass/fail only), instructor name, and description of planned coursework are required.  Additional information/supporting documentation may be uploaded via the ‘File Attachments’ section.

2. Once the student submits the form, it will first go to the department/program for review.  Once the department/program approves, the chosen faculty member will receive an email notification and the form will be in their my.harvard worklist to review and approve/deny.
