Applying for Reinstatement

Important Information:

Former HSPH students that withdrew from their degree program, or were administratively withdrawn, may apply for reinstatement to their program. The following stipulations apply:

  • Applicants must be at a zero financial balance, and all indebtedness to the University paid.
  • Students can apply for reinstatement in a required term of enrollment, according to their program.
    • Academic-year students can return in a fall/spring term.
    • Summer-only and summer-focused students can return in a summer term.
  • Approved applicants will return to their previous program according to the published academic year policies and tuition rates based on the term of reinstatement.
  • Note: students that have been academically withdrawn must reapply via the HSPH Admissions Office.

Reinstatement is not guaranteed. However, the following factors are considered:

  • the length of time spent away from HSPH (no more than 5 years),
  • the activities undertaken during that absence, and
  • the department’s space and advising availability.

Reinstatement Process:

  • Contact the department/program in which you were previously enrolled to discuss your reinstatement intentions.
  • With your department/program, develop an academic plan to be submitted with your application.
  • Write a statement of purpose outlining the reasons for not completing the program.
    • What have you been doing since leaving the program?
    • Why do you think you can successfully complete the program?
  • Submit one letter of support from your department/program.
  • If needed, consult the Office of Financial Aid and/or the Harvard International Office.
  • Complete the Reinstatement Application form and submit it along with these required documents to the Registrar’s Office. Applications must be received and approved before the intended reinstatement term begins. Applications submitted after a term beings will not be considered for that term.
