Zeqiu Branden Wang (G3, Gokhan Hotamisligil Lab)

Where are you from and what do you enjoy most about your hometown?

I am from Tianjin, China. It is a coastal city near the capital, Beijing. One of the things I enjoy the most is the local breakfast. When I go back to my hometown, the first thing I do is wake up early in the morning and enjoy a hot local breakfast soup.

What is your research focused on?

My research focuses on the function of adipose tissue during acute stress. I am particularly interested in investigating the role of FABP4, a protein that is secreted by adipocytes, perhaps in response to acute stress. I aim to determine its physiological function.

What is your favorite part of your research?

My favorite part of my research is its close connection to human physiology. I am amazed by how adipose tissue has evolved to prepare and protect us from environmental challenges.

How do you relax when you’re not working?

I like playing computer games with my wife or hiking with her and the other family member, my dog Ergou.

Tell us about an activity outside of lab you’re involved in and why it’s important to you

One of the most meaningful activities I engaged in was hosting a “Youth in Public Health Symposium” in the summer of 2023 in Shanghai, China. It was an opportunity to share my passion for basic science in public health with high school students and teach them fundamental principles for navigating their curiosity by finding answers.
