Flyer for 2019 NGH Symposium

Malnutrition is now the leading modifiable risk factor contributing to morbidity and mortality globally. In low and middle income countries, a double burden is manifest through continued high prevalence of undernutrition, while overweight and obesity is rising in all countries of the world including Africa and south Asia. Food systems are critical to advancing health and nutrition of individuals and populations, through ensuring availability and consumption of quality diets that prevent both under and over nutrition. High consumption of animal source foods is associated with higher risk of non communicable diseases, but moderate consumption is recommended especially for pregnant women and children in low income countries to provide optimal sources of protein and micronutrients. Plant source foods can deliver adequate amounts of almost all essential nutrients, and are favorable from the perspective of greenhouse gas emissions and climate change, but are missing some features of animal source foods such as high micronutrient profile.

The 10th Annual Nutrition and Global Health Symposium, Food Systems as Drivers of Optimal Nutrition and Health, will explore opportunities and challenges in building a food system that delivers a healthy diet to meet the double burden of malnutrition. Livestreaming is available here.
