The Global Infectious Disease (GID) Training Program (D43TW011386) is supported by the Fogarty International Center at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Addis Continental Institute of Public Health (ACIPH), in collaboration with Addis Ababa University (AAU) and Haramaya University, offers research training opportunities to Ethiopian public health researchers, physician scientists, and other health professionals. The goal of this training program is to develop a cadre of public health researchers in Ethiopia prepared to lead research and scientific projects in pediatric infectious disease, with a particular emphasis on nutrition and diarrheal and respiratory diseases.
The program provides research training to junior-and mid-level researchers and health college faculty in substantive areas of pediatric infectious diseases, epidemiological methods, implementation science, and in career advancement areas. The specific aims of this program are to:
- Develop a critical mass of mid-level public health researchers who can address priority childhood infectious disease, nutrition, and implementation science issues in the Ethiopian context by leading research programs and building additional capacity.
- Build a critical mass of junior public health researchers who can design and successfully carry out rigorous research projects in pediatric infectious diseases and nutrition using training and mentoring approaches designed to advance research with potential for significant impact on the nutritional status and health of the Ethiopian population.
The research training program is structured to provide an appropriate balance of short, medium, and long term training opportunities for participants from Ethiopia in both Boston and Ethiopia. The program has four principal strategies to address pediatric infectious disease and nutrition training gaps in Ethiopia: postdoctoral training; short-term doctoral training; intensive short courses; and annual symposia and monthly seminars.
The program is jointly led by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (HSPH) and Addis Continental Institute of Public Health (ACIPH) under Wafaie Fawzi (HSPH) and Yemane Berhane (ACIPH).

Postdoctoral (Long-Term) Fellowships
The GID Training Program provides 18-month research training fellowship opportunities to well-qualified junior faculty and advanced researchers in Ethiopia. This program is designed for fellows to refine methodological skills and substantive knowledge innutrition and pediatric infectious disease research by participating in coursework and working with mentors from Harvard Chan School and ACIPH. Postdoctoral trainees will participate in a one-month orientation at ACIPH, followed by six months of coursework and focused mentorship at Harvard Chan School in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, and 11 months at their home institution to advance their research. Fellows are required to return to Ethiopia upon completion of training in Boston to further their research and participate in GID annual symposia and short course instruction.
Qualifications: Candidates for postdoctoral training are junior faculty and advanced researchers working at Ethiopian research institutions, including ACIPH, AAU, and Haramaya University. Applicants must have a PhD, MD, or related advanced degree. Successful candidates will have a demonstrated interest in pediatric infectious diseases, particularly nutrition, diarrheal and respiratory diseases.
Please note that the call for applications has closed. Please check back in the Fall of 2024 for information regarding applications for the next recruitment cycle.
Summer Training at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health
The GID Training Program provides six-week training opportunities through the Summer Session for Public Health Studies Program at Harvard Chan to well-qualified candidates who have completed or are currently enrolled in a PhD/doctoral program in medicine, public health, or a related field at ACIPH, Haramaya University, AAU, or University of Gondar. This program is designed for trainees to refine methodological skills and substantive knowledge in nutrition and pediatric infectious disease research by participating in coursework and working with mentors from Harvard Chan and ACIPH.
Short-term trainees will attend the six-week Summer Session for Public Health Studies at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and will take 7.5 credits of non-degree coursework. Trainees will be supported to travel to Boston to participate in the coursework in person. Upon completion of the coursework, trainees are expected to return to Ethiopia to further their research and participate in GID annual symposia and short course instruction.
Qualifications: Applicants must have completed or be currently enrolled in a PhD/doctoral program in medicine, public health, or a related field at ACIPH, Haramaya University, AAU, or University of Gondar. Applicants must be admitted into the Harvard Chan Summer Session for Public Health Studies Program via a separate application process in order to be considered for the GID fellowship. Successful candidates will have a demonstrated interest in pediatric infectious diseases, particularly nutrition, diarrheal and respiratory diseases.
Please note that the call for applications closed on January 15th, 2024. Please check back in the Fall of 2024 for information regarding applications for the 2025 Summer Session.
