Apply to Master in Health Care Management Program

The Master in Health Care Management (MHCM) program at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health uses the Schools of Public Health Application Service (SOPHAS) – https://sophas.org/). SOPHAS is an online, common application service.

What are the deadlines?

There are two application deadlines. The priority application deadline is December 1 and the final, space available application deadline is March 1; to ensure all applications materials arrive on time, applicants are highly encouraged to submit to SOPHAS about a week prior. Prospective students may apply after the priority deadline on a space available basis with prior permission from the program. Again, where possible we encourage candidates to submit their application in advance of the deadline to allow for processing time.

When will SOPHAS send my application to the Harvard Chan School?

SOPHAS will only forward complete applications to the Harvard Chan School.

When is the application available?

The application is available starting the beginning of September.

What does a completed application consist of?

  • Personal Statement (Statement of Purpose and Objectives)
  • Resume / Business CV
  • Official transcripts for each post-secondary institution attended
    • See below for specifics on domestic vs. international transcripts
  • Three letters of reference (at least one from a current manager)
  • Standardized Test Scores – test scores are optional at this time. The program will accept one standardized test score (MCAT for most US and Canadian medical graduates and typically the GRE for foreign medical graduates)
  • SOPHAS application fee

Official Transcripts

We recommend that candidates request two signed and sealed copies of all post-secondary transcripts, marks sheets, and degree conferral certificates. The first should be submitted as a part of your application to SOPHAS. The second is an extra copy for your records or a backup. Note, for transfer or study abroad credits, students must submit transcripts from the original institutions. We recommend requesting transcripts as early as possible; SOPHAS will only release a completed application to the Harvard Chan School. Please read on for specific recommendations for domestic and international transcripts.

Transcripts (US and Canadian English-language institutions)

SOPHAS requires that all prior coursework and grades be entered into the application. Please refer to SOPHAS for instructions on requesting and sending transcripts to them. We highly recommend that MHCM applicants take advantage of the optional, fee-based SOPHAS Coursework Entry service where SOPHAS will enter your prior coursework for you. To take advantage of this service, go to the “Academic History” section of SOPHAS and select “Transcript Entry.” As needed select the “Tell me more” button. Note, SOPHAS will enter your coursework only after all transcripts have been received and your application is considered complete.

Transcripts (non-US or Canadian non-English-language institutions)

Applicants with international transcripts should visit the Harvard Chan School Admissions Office Transcripts and Marks Sheets website for detailed submission instructions. In brief, these transcripts must be sent to World Education Services (WES), a credentialing service, before the WES evaluated and analyzed transcripts and report are then sent from WES to SOPHAS. The Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health requires the WES “iCAP” package that verifies and evaluates your transcripts course by course.

Letters of Reference

The program requires three letters of reference. References should comment on the candidate’s executive leadership experience and potential. Candidates should seek references from managers as senior in their organization as possible; at least one letter should come from a current direct manager.

We recommend requesting letters of reference as early as possible; SOPHAS will only release a completed application to the Harvard Chan School.

SOPHAS – Selecting the MHCM program

After creating a SOPHAS account: at the program selection screen, first choose “Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health”, then select “search” to load the list of programs. Next, select “Master in Health Care Management (MHCM)”, in the first column, roughly halfway down the list of programs, by selecting the plus symbol to the left of the degree name. The next time you log into SOPHAS the MHCM program will be listed as “Health Care Management.”

What is the application process?

Applicants apply directly to SOPHAS, a common application service. Please note that interviews are not a required part of the application. Feel free to call to discuss the match between our program and your career goals. Completed applications are forwarded by SOPHAS to the Harvard Chan School Admissions Office, then to a faculty committee for review and admission recommendation. Applications are then reviewed by a school-wide committee for final decision.

When will I know my acceptance status?

Typically, candidates who submit completed applications by December 1 will be notified of admission decision in February.
