Leslie M. Howes

Leslie M. Howes serves as the Director for the Office of Regulatory Affairs and Research Compliance (ORARC). In this role, Leslie is responsible for overseeing ORARC’s daily operations in a broad range of research compliance activities for the Harvard Chan School, including animal research, research integrity, and lab and biosafety initiatives. Leslie also oversees the Harvard Longwood Campus Human Research Protection Program, including IRB Operations and the Quality Improvement Program.

The HRPP is a comprehensive program that promotes the welfare and rights of human research participants, facilitates excellence in human research and provides timely and high-quality Institutional Review Board (IRB) review, education, and monitoring of human research conducted by agents of the HLC schools (HMS, HSDM, HSPH). Leslie ensures that the Program remains in compliance with relevant federal regulations, state laws, School and University policies and procedures and that the organization’s AAHRPP-accreditation remains in good standing.

Prior to this role, Leslie served as the Managing Director for the Office of Human Research Administration in which she was responsible for the review, approval and oversight of human research studies conducted by agents of Harvard Longwood Campus (HLC) schools.  Leslie earned her Certification of IRB Professionals (CIP) designation in 2004. She received her BS in Neuroscience from Bates College and her Masters in Public Health from Tufts University School of Medicine.
