Sitara Mahtani, MPH ’20 was one of two HSB students to win an Audience Recognition Award at this year’s MPH-65 Field Practice Poster Night. Sitara’s poster, Filling the Gaps: Expanding the Reach of an Oral Health Screening/Education Program for Schoolchildren in Cambridge, MA highlighted her summer practicum with Cambridge Public Health Department. As a Rose Service Learning Fellow, Sitara worked on Healthy Smiles, an oral health screening and education program for preschoolers, 1st, 3rd, 6th, and 9th graders in Cambridge Public Schools. The primary aims of the project were to explore avenues for program expansion and prepare for program evaluation. Sitara had the opportunity to deliver oral health education at two summer playgroups, create a logic model that mapped out program activities and intended outcomes, and develop evaluation questions to assess how well the program is meeting its goals. The poster presentation gave Sitara and her peers the opportunity to present their practicum work to judges, guests, and each other.
