2024 Tashjian Award Program

Armen H. Tashjian, Jr., M.D.

Armen H. Tashjian Jr.Dr. Tashjian, Professor of Toxicology, Emeritus, in the Department of Genetics and Complex Diseases at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, led the school’s toxicology program for three decades. He pioneered the understanding of the molecular mechanisms of toxicity of environmental chemicals and therapeutic agents. Dr. Tashjian also made seminal contributions in the areas of endocrinology and the mechanisms of hormone action. He was a recipient of the Astwood Award for his basic scientific research and the Endocrine Society’s Distinguished Leadership Award. He served as president of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research and the International Bone and Mineral Society. His work was instrumental in the introduction of powerful therapeutics against osteoporosis in humans. Dr. Tashjian was an officer in numerous scientific societies, served on NIH study sections and government advisory panels, and on the editorial boards of over 15 scientific journals including the New England Journal of Medicine. Dr. Tashjian was a devoted teacher throughout the entirety of his career and mentored nearly 100 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.

Renata L.S. Goncalves, Ph.D.

GoncalvesDr. Renata Goncalves joined the Department of Molecular Metabolism at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in 2015 as a research associate. Since 2018, she has been a research associate within Dr. Hotamışlıgil’s lab. Dr. Goncalves completed her studies at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Her research has focused on understanding mitochondrial bioenergetics, particularly how the production and regulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) influence metabolic adaptations and maladaptations in pathophysiology.

Armen H. Tashjian, Jr. Research Award

To honor his many accomplishments, the friends and family of Dr. Armen H. Tashjian, Jr., Professor of Toxicology, Emeritus, in the Department of Genetics and Complex Diseases (renamed Molecular Metabolism in 2019), established the Armen H. Tashjian, Jr. Award for Excellence in Endocrine Research. This award recognizes exceptional emerging academic scholars and faculty members at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and surrounding Harvard institutions, who pursue innovative ideas in basic biomedical sciences related to endocrinology.
