For Course Instructors

At the Curriculum Center, we support course instructors  in the process of identifying online resources and tools and facilitating distribution of third-party materials as a commitment to providing affordable and quality educational content for students. It is the policy of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health to ensure all required course materials are in compliance with the Harvard University Office of the General Counsel’s copyright and fair use guidelines for the Harvard Community.

Please see the following document for the Curriculum Center Guidelines for best practices for course materials setup in accordance with this policy.

The Curriculum Center does not provide support for Canvas technology. For questions regarding Canvas course website access and setup, please contact the Media and Educational Technology Services team at

The Curriculum Center’s Priorities

First, to promote and in assist identifying freely available online resources for use as course readings.

Second, to secure copyright permissions for all additional readings that are not available online and may need to be reproduced as electronic documents posted to course websites. Permissions fees are term billed to students as course materials fees based on the individual content of each course.

Process for Requesting Course Readings

All instructors assigning reading materials that may require copyright clearance for reproduction are asked to submit syllabi to the Curriculum Center four weeks in advance of the start of each term.

Feel free to contact the Curriculum Center for guidance and assistance in selecting teaching materials for your course. We are happy to connect via phone or in person with faculty, instructors and teaching assistants who would like additional support.

Examples of materials that may require copyright clearance include book excerpts, articles from journals not covered under the Harvard Libraries electronic resources, and Harvard Business School case materials.
