Researchers from the Harvard Pop Center in Cambridge, MA and the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa who are affiliated with the HAALSI study have published a paper in the Journal of Affective Disorders that finds that the reliability of the commonly used scale to assess depression (Center for Epidemiologic Depression Scale (CES-D)) differed by gender. Women business owners in India & Sri Lanka commonly invest their microfinance loans & grants in male household member’s business enterprises

A recent working paper by Harvard Pop Center Bell Fellow Natalia Rigol, PhD, along with faculty member Rohini Pande, PhD, is the subject of this post on Ideas for India that offers some explanations as to why previous studies have shown that female-operated enterprises in India and Sri Lanka have not benefited from access to grants and loans as much as male-operated businesses.

New study finds white men and women have significantly lower rates of suicide in states with higher levels of social capital
