Congratulations to Biostatistics Chair John Quackenbush and Alumnus Miguel Marino, PhD ’11 who were both inducted into the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) in a ceremony last week. Dr. Quackenbush was named to NAM for being a pioneer in computational and systems biology and reproducible research with a record of continuous innovation. His recent work bridges the gap between genetics and gene regulation, giving unprecedented insight into human health and disease, including how a person’s sex influences disease risk and response to therapy.Miguel Marino, PhD ’11, who is currently Associate Professor in the Departments of Family Medicine and Biostatistics at Oregon Health and Science University, was inducted as a world leader in primary care biostatistics. As co-founder of the Primary Care Latino Equity Research lab, he pioneers novel quantitative approaches to study racial/ethnic subpopulations in electronic health record (EHR) data. His pioneering methods to use EHR data for health equity research have revolutionized this field.Membership in NAM is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievements and commitment to service.
