We are extremely pleased to announce the receipt of a very generous gift to the Department of Biostatistics that has enabled us to fully endow the James Ware Fellowship Fund and the Laird Family Financial Aid Fund. These funds will support our students in perpetuity, and we can’t think of a better way to honor the enormous contributions both Jim Ware and Nan Laird have made to the School, our Department, our students, and to the discipline of biostatistics.
We are grateful to have received numerous donations to our various scholarship and departmental support funds this past year. All gifts earmarked for student financial support, large and small, are particularly appreciated! Given the very high cost of tuition and living costs, this will continue to be our greatest financial need.
The Department received a large bequest this year for the John F. and Virginia B. Taplin Endowment for Biostatistics. We are very, very appreciative to the Taplin family, and to John and Virginia’s long-term vision and generosity to the Chan School and our Department.
As we announced last year, the Marvin and Thelma Zelen Assistant/Associate Professorship was formally established to honor the enduring legacy of the Zelens and their countless contributions to the Department. Harvard requires we raise $3 million during the next 4 years to endow the Professorship; if we ultimately fall short, your gifts will be added to the Marvin Zelen Education and Statistical Leadership Award endowment, which funds the annual Zelen Leadership Award event and much-needed scholarships supporting the education of the next generation of biostatisticians. We’ve received several large gifts to the professorship in the past year, but are still significantly short of our goal. We hope you will consider contributing to this fund.
