Professor Rafa Irizarry was recently interviewed by insideBIGDATA, where he discusses the gap between the demand for data scientists and the availability of people trained to fill those roles.
Rafa has contributed to several massive open online courses (MOOCs), which he believes are meeting the challenge to quickly fill the gap by offering data science training while universities develop more comprehensive undergraduate and graduate programs. These MOOCs also meet the needs of people currently in the workforce who are looking to gain data science skills without going back to school.
