Braun & Parmigiani Receive Footbridge Grant

As members of a team composed of investigators from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Massachusetts General Hospital, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Research Fellow Danielle Braun and DFCI Biostatistics Chair & Professor Giovanni Parmigiani have been awarded a 2017 KI-DF/HCC Bridge project award, as a Footbridge grant.

The award will support a project called “Predicting Cancer Risk After Multi-Gene Panel Testing, Across All Cancer Types”.  The project proposes to use machine learning and natural language processing (NLP) technologies to develop computational tools for automating risk learning and improving decision support.  Ultimately the tools will constantly scan medical literature for relevant studies, extract data from these studies, and assess their reliability. The main deliverable of this work will be a website with actionable predictions of absolute risk for a large number of gene/cancer combinations.
