Cross-Registration Credit Conversion & Grading

The following guide is intended for Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health students.

Conversion of Harvard T. H. Chan credits and grades for students of other schools is at the sole discretion of that student’s home school. Students from other schools interested in cross-registering should speak with their home Registrar’s Office to ensure they understand how courses taken at the Chan school will translate to their academic record.

Cross-Registration Grade Conversion

Ordinal and Pass/Fail Grades

These are used by most other schools. These grades are directly equivalent to Harvard Chan School grades and are treated the same way on a student’s record:

    • They will be posted to the Harvard Chan School transcript
    • They will be calculated into the GPA
    • They will count toward a student’s Harvard Chan School ordinal credit requirements
    • They will count toward a student’s term credit limit

Unique Ordinal Grading

Certain Harvard schools use unique grading systems:

    • Business School
    • Law School
    • Graduate School of Design

These grades are not directly equivalent to Harvard Chan School grades. They are treated differently than Harvard Chan School courses on a student’s record:

    • They will be posted to the Harvard Chan School transcript
    • They will not be calculated into the GPA
    • They will count toward a student’s Harvard Chan School ordinal credit requirements
    • They will count toward a student’s term credit limit

Language Courses

Harvard Arts & Sciences, Harvard Medical and M.I.T. offer language courses. Students may enroll in these, but should be aware that they are treated differently than other cross-registration courses on a student’s record:

    • They will not be posted to the Harvard Chan School transcript
    • They will not be calculated into the GPA
    • They will not count toward a student’s Harvard Chan School ordinal credit requirements
    • They will count toward a student’s term credit limit
